National Park Service
PUBLICATION DESCRIPTION: The National Park Service – Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program (NPS-RTCA) has worked in partnership with Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native communities for more than 30 years on conservation and outdoor recreation projects. Consisting of staff with a broad variety of professional backgrounds, including community planning, landscape design, conservation, and natural resource management, the National Park Service brings passion and expertise to projects across the country." I was contacted by the National Park Service to create an indigenous themed cover for their most recent publication. I chose to depict the turtle since it is a sacred and significant animal in Native American culture symbolizing Mother Earth, representing spirituality, wisdom, healing, and strength of heart.
Wildlife Stewardship on Tribal Lands: Our Place Is in Our Soul
BOOK DESCRIPTION: "The content of this book is not limited to the invaluable reports of research findings, explications of methodologies, and case studies. Capturing oral histories and spiritual knowledge through interviews with tribal leaders and the work of Native artists and writers honors the holistic awareness of the land offered to readers of this unique volume. Ultimately, the contributors to Wildlife Stewardship on Tribal Lands demonstrate how tribal practices are pivotal guideposts for those seeking to protect and harness our natural resources in ways that can help reverse grievous biodiversity losses and ensure the health of our environment for future generations."

To me, it was about understanding the delicate balance of all that nature provides to the CRIT reservation. Each topic is depicted individually from the top to bottom in the order of the theme: Cultivation, Conservation, & Preservation. Farmers are cultivating the land, scientists and conservationists are maintaining the water supply, and preservationists are protecting delicate environmental ecosystems.
Illustration of 3 children's books (10 Numbers, 10 Animals, & 10 Colors) for the children of CRIT in four tribal languages: Mohave, Chemehuevi, Hopi, and Navajo.

The impatient coyote is depicted on the lower left throwing the jewels – stars – into the sky without permission. "To the Navajo, Father Sky and Mother Earth, who represent male and female, equally provide all that is needed to live and prosper on earth. Many Navajo ceremonies, prayers, and songs are based on maintaining balance and harmony between Father Sky and Mother Earth."
